Lit, laptops, and lack of thought
Every class I teach is focused in one way or another on helping people understand how books work and how to get the most from them. We can unplug for three hours a week or so in order to pursue that goal, can’t we?
An interesting post on the availability of the internet in the classroom found on Justin Taylor’s blog here. It’s interesting to think about how technology is making us shift our brains. Another interesting read is The Atlantic’s article, “Is Google Making us Stupid?”. But it isn’t just technology — I’ve found that constantly meeting an infant’s/toddler’s needs has the same effect: a slow-down in my ability to sustain attention.
What do you think?

I think it’s totally true. Hubby was reading a book, and I looked at far he’d gotten as was all impressed, and he said “weren’t you going to base your career on reading history?” oh. yea. Now it seems I can hardly get a book read. Though I was very proud of myself for reading a good chunk of an academic monograph the other day. Its sad that I’m proud of myself.
