Comments on "What are you reading?"

  1. I’m in between reads right now, but I just finished Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card and Chuck Klosterman IV, both of which were pretty fun, albeit for different reasons.

That Enneagram book has my interest piqued.

  2. Just read ‘The Blind Side’ by Michael Lewis, which was well written and held my attention. The author managed to make football sound a lot more interesting than it appears to me on screen, so I applaud him for that.

I’ve have ‘in defense of Food’ and loved it, insightful, funny and not too preachy.

I have a bunch of (overdue) library books on investing and saving. I’ve become a Dave Ramsay fanatic and we are a few months away from paying of the remnants of David’s UK student loans. We’ve never had credit card debt, but we nearly always had car loans and never budgeted until recently.
Anyway, I though I’d better read up on investing as we need to start a pension and college savings once we’re debt free.

In the last year I’ve read ‘The Senator and the Sharecropper’ which I loved. It contrasts the lives of US Senator James O’ Eastland and Fannie Lou Hamer who was a civil rights activist, both from Sunflower county in MS.

I read ‘Church of Lies’ By Flora Jessop (library book), about her escape from the FLDS in Hilldale, UT and Colorado City, AZ. It was harrowing read and a tad too graphic for me in places as she details her abuse at the hands of her father, but it’s a real eye opener to the communities that live on your state border.
Along the similar lines was Jon Krakauer’s ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ which deals with a double murder by two mormon men, I don’t think I finished that one though.

‘Why Johnny can’t preach’ by T David Gordon, is a little book and very easy to read, I think he pretty much hits the nail on the head.

‘Artisan Bread in 5 mins per day’ – does that count? I’ve been able to make great bread, not too good for the waistline though.

  5. Just finished Up High in the Trees and really liked it–a quick read written from the PoV of an 8-year-old boy with autism. Now reading A Century Turns by William Bennett. Not my normal type of book, but enjoying it (only 30 pages in). :)

  8. I’ve just read ‘Fruit of the Lemon’ by Andrea Levy – I think that you would like it. Then I read ‘A Far Cry from Kensington’ by Muriel Spark which was gentle and amusing with a hint of irony. I’m currently tackling ‘Crime and Punishment’ and also dipping into ‘Your Pregnancy week by week’ :-)

  9. Judith, Bryce really enjoyed C&P; I couldn’t really get into it, though have enjoyed other Russian lit. And congrats on #2! How far along are you?

  10. I have only just started C&P and I have to say that it didn’t grab me – I might try again when I’m not as tired :-) – Likewise, Craig really enjoyed it, so maybe it’s a boy thing?

And thanks! According to my scan my due date is 19th August, making me about 18 weeks gone. Still slightly freaked out about having two babies under two…any tips? We’re mainly very excited though :-)

Not being on facebook is making it more difficult to spread the news!

  11. So they’ll be 21 months apart roughly, that shouldn’t be too bad. :) E and P are 19 months apart. I guess re: tips, do your darnedest to get them to nap at the same time and employ lots of initial help to watch Elissa so you can nap with the second one. It’s just harder to sleep with 2. Now that Porter’s nearing 1 (on Monday!), it’s really become much easier, though the recent sharing-of-a-room is another transition.
